La Brea Tar Pits

The La Brea tar pits was my favorite part of the trip. I wish we had more time to see everything they have. I was disappointed that all the pits had fences around them (so people don't kill themselves). I couldn't get a good picture of any of them because of the type of fence they used. There was one area with about three small spots where the tar was coming up that wasn't fenced off. I played with it for a little bit with a stick. Definitely not something you want to get on your clothes.

This is the other side of the same pit. See the red artwork thing in the background? The road is just behind it and runs right next to the pit.

Pit 91 where they are still excavating animal bones


This was an exhibit to show how sticky the tar is. It was so difficult to pull those bars up. They even modified the tar in it so people could actually move them...apparently it was impossible for anyone to move them until they "thinned" it out a little.

This is the "fish bowl" you can watch them clean bones that they find in the pits. You may remember from season 5 of "Dirty Jobs" when Mike Rowe came here.

Hmm...A horse? I thought they said there were no horses in the Americas before the Spaniards came? I guess they will have to cross that criticism off the list. The Book of Mormon is true.
